It is in the zoological section of Cecco d’Ascoli's encyclopedic work entitled L'Acerba that the emblematic figure of the bird woman appears, unpublished in Italian literature of the Middle Ages. This polymorphous creature with a highly spiritual essence, whose mystery and complexity are amply nourished by the richness of the symbolic references used by the author, gives this still little-known work all its originality. - [Abstract]
