Magpies are noisy birds; their calls can sound like a human voice. The text says there is something divine abot this bird, because if a magpie lands in a tree with a nail in it, the nail will immediately fall out (something usually said of the woodpecker). The author adds with a note of disbelief: "but you can think what you like of this story".
